Celebrating local retail in Old Town

Zoobie’s Old Town Tavern welcomed Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero and local retailers to share words about the importance of supporting Michigan retailers on June 17.  This summer Buy Nearby is traveling around Michigan, spreading the word about the importance of shopping nearby!

“Area retailers offer customers a personalized, hands-on experience that out-of-state online retailers just can’t match,” Mayor Bernero said. “Our businesses rely on dedicated customers who realize the value they offer and buy nearby because of it.”

Austin Ashley, executive director of the Old Town Commercial Association, also shared that buying nearby gives people the chance to not only support Michigan-made products, but also support friends and neighbors who work in those businesses.

The Buy Nearby campaign was created to excite Michiganders about the unique shops in their area and the value of supporting local retailers.  Michigan retail trade accounted for $94.6 billion in economic activity in 2013, with plenty of room to grow.

Buy Nearby’s next stop will be Traverse City in August!
